OLYMPIC NEWS UPDATE FROM OAKVILLE!

Tough day for Canadians in super-G! - Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

WHISTLER, B.C. – The United States continued its outstanding Olympic Games Friday morning, looking good for two more skiing medals in the men’s super-G.
Barring an out-of-character finish by a skier out of the bottom-ranked flight, Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal won the race, ahead of Americans Bode Miller and Andrew Weibrecht, the winning margin more than a quarter of a second.
With the U.S. skiers now up to six Alpine medals, Canada again missed the podium. Erik Guay of Mont Tremblant, Que., finished a very good fifth, but Manuel Osborne-Paradis crashed about 33 seconds into his race, although he did not appear to be injured.
Later on, Robbie Dixon wiped out about 70 seconds into his run, although he popped right up to his feet. Canada’s final racer was veteran Jan Hudec, who finished in 1:32.09 and was in 22nd place with about 20 skiers still to come down.
This continues Canada’s disappointing showing here in the speed events. Guay was a solid fifth in the men’s downhill last Monday, his best showing of the season, but Osborne-Paradis was 17th and Dixon, who lives here in Whistler, hooked a gate 15 seconds into his run and wiped out at the midpoint of the course.
The medals would be the second of the Games for both Svindal, second to Didier Defago in the downhill, and Miller, who was third in that race.
Svindal skied the course in 1 minute, 30.34 seconds, with Miller finishing in 1:30.62 and Weibrecht in 1:30.65. Guay was nearby in 1:30.68, with Italian Werner Heel slipping into fourth at 1:30.67.
The race was marred by several crashes, the most serious looking involving Sweden’s Patrik Jaerbyn, who tumbled headlong near the top of the course. He was towed down the mountain on a gurney and taken away by ambulance, but there was no word on his condition.
